He was on Five Live before Chlimbo (as they also say in the 'Pool) complaining about how really he has a heart of gold, is completely misunderstood and generally gets an unfair rap from referees and journalists alike.
I mean, I see his point. EVERY time he beats someone up while minding his own business, the police start PICKING ON HIM. It's just so unfair.
The only disappointing thing about his being remanded and not getting bail is that if he had been able to play before his next appointment up in front of the beak, "Going down, going down, going down" would have been a rather amusing chant
i actually feel a bit of sorrow for him. i fully accept that he has to take responsibility for his actions but he has been trying to straighten out his life over the past 18 months. unfortunately he seems to have a volatile nature and also attracts trouble - as such he is an easy target for those around him.
unfortunately i don't think joey has had the best examples around him throughout his life. i'm not making excuses for him but his profile clearly doesn't do him any favours. i hope he can learn something positive through whatever experiences he gains as a result of his current predicament and that, eventually, he's able to make the most of the undoubted talents he has got.
Blimey Schmindie, you are far more tolerant than me. Do you not think that his repeated thuggish behaviour means he deserves to go to jail and loose his job?
If it was just a case of his having a hair trigger temper and lashing out when provoked, I would sort of understand that....but there always seems to be this edge of nastiness about the fracas he gets involved in...especially the "stubbing cigar in colleague's eye" episode. He doe scome across as reasonably articulate and bright by footballer standards. There is something about him that makes me think he will usually be a ringleader in any trouble, rather than just being led astray by others....maybe i'm wrong.
I'm not sure his losing his livlehood is necessarily a fitting punishment, but certainly he should not be treated any differently to any other yob in that situation
I think he needs to be punished in accordance with the laws of the country - and if they deign that a custodial sentence is suitable for the nature of the crime (assuming he is found guilty) then I have absolutely no problem with that.
If that does happen then I hope that while he's serving his custodial sentence that he is allowed to attempt rehabilitation (ie. he can carry on some of the work he has been undertaking with counsellors and mentors at the 'Sporting Chance' clinic and that he is able to learn from his past mistakes).
I'd hate to see him 'written off' at the current juncture though as I don't see what good that would do anyone. I know he's in a very priviliged position as a Premier League Footballer but, let's be honest, if decency and morality was the selection criteria for pro footballers then about 0.1% of the current breed would still be plying their trade - I wouldn't wish eternal joblessness on any people convicted (if he is) of assault - I'd hope that they could mend their ways and make some sort of contribution to society :-)

I don't buy the 'tough upbringing bad influences' stuff. I know lots of kids and families who have been brought up in 'tough' places and they don't pick fights..
Hi ITB :) Don't get me wrong - I think that Barton has severe 'anger management' issues and that these need to be dealt with/punished properly. I agree that he has had many chances and that eventually these will dry up.
That said, he's still not been found guilty of this particular assault, just charged I think (cedes to itb on legal knowledge though). I guess that the problem is that sooo much conjecture surrounds cases involving footballers because we think we know them from what has been reported before (admittedly in Barton's case there is previous and I don't defend that in the slightest) and because we have witnessed their behaviour on the pitch (Barton caused Pedro Mendes some severe damage last season [as if Ben Thatcher hadn't done enough].
I suppose my gripe is that the treatment Barton is getting over this is sooooooo disproportionate to the treatment he'd be getting if he was just another 'Scally' in trouble for getting boozed up and then having a fight...

I dunno H. I love it when it snows PROPERLY and settles 'n' that for a decent period. When it just snows enough to snarl up the traffic and make you get cold wet and miserable on the way home before melting and making everything muddy and dirty, I would as soon it didn't bother.
But as it sounds as if you have been LOUNGING around on the SOFA all day, probably eating endless CAKES, no doubt still feeling rather Christmassy while the rest of us WORK, you probably don't mind what it's like for us getting home for work do you? Hmmm?

It's quite tasty actually ITB. The problem is that I'm still hungry after eating it. And I think eating 3 of them in one sitting kind of goes against the point. As does topping it up with a proper chocolate bar.

Looks like the decision has been overturned and he's now been released on bail btw.
